ARM to provide chips for brain injury implants

On May 17th , Wednesday ARM announced  that it is pairing with the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering (CSNE)at the University of Washington to develop a line of brain implantable system on a chip that can interface between our squishy bits and the next generation of  powered prosthetics.


One of the most primary challenges facing Prosthetic development today is the lack of  sensory feedback.Organization are developing smart hands that can "see" and "think" for themselves but the ability for a prosthetic appendage to transmit sensory information back to user.

These chips are designed to act as intermediates. They will work to decode the complex singles emanating from the brain and transcribe them into digital signals that computer can understand and user friendly too.

It's a more permanent version for what researchers at Braingate 2 and the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) center have already developed . It's also a more direct connection then what the Johns Hopkins applied in Physics Laboratory and Oscar created , both of which rely on the patient's  peripheral nervous system .
ARM hopes that these chips will eventually be able to help patient's suffering from everything from seizures to Parkinson's disease, spinal injuries to strokes. 
As the chips are designed to help people with brain and spinal injuries and will sit inside the skull. Chip designed giant ARM has teamed up with US researchers to developed a human brain. ARM Holdings, which is based in Cambridge, was sold to Japanese firm SoftBank last year for $24bn. In March this year, SoftBank was reported to be considering selling a 25% stake in ARM to a Saudi-backed investment group.
