Hey friends !!
I am here with a new post !!
I am here with a new post !!
The National Aeronautics and space administration (NASA)
has decided to give a name to newly discovered organism after the most lovable late president of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam .
A bacteria has been found on the international space station (ISS).
The Researchers at NASA (JPL) Jet Propulsion Laboratory , at California which works on interplanetary travel, had discovered the new bacteria on the filters installed on ISS. To give honor to Late President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam they gave the name to the bacteria on his name as Solibacillus kalamii a big salute to them for doing this great work.
Genus name is Solibacillus which is a spore-forming bacteria.
The filter on which the new bug was found and remained on-board from 40 months is a high- efficiency particulate arrestance filter (HEPA) . According to them even though it orbits
earth at an altitude of 400 kilometers , ISS have been home to many types of bacteria and fungi which can co-habitat the stations with astronauts who live and work there .
" I am responsibly sure it has hitch hiked to the space station on board some cargo and then survive the hostile conditions of space" explained Venkateswaran a senior research scientist at the biotechnology and with (JPL) group. Venkateswaran is a part of team exploring the possibilities of alien life, that towards its responsibilities include monitoring bug - levels on ISS.
Today the ISS is of the size of a football field and its construction started with a launch in 1998 and as of now it is the largest human-made object orbiting the earth. Weighing about 419 tonnes, it can house a maximum of six astronauts and has costs roughly USD 150 billion.Till date, 227 astronauts have flown to the space station. All air and water recycled because it is a completely closed environment.
Team has not characterized the bacteria fully but the hints that the new bug could be a key source for chemicals that can help protect against radiation damage.
That's all for today
Thank you.
