Yeah, I am talking about the recent research of security experts who found that over millions of email credentials has been leaked on dark web, which belongs to employees from Fortune 500 companies.Now, if a question arise in your mind about what is Fortune 500 companies then let me tell you that Fortune 500 is a list of those companies with their annual rankings in top 500 which were complied and published by Fortune magazine in United States annually. This list includes companies which were held publicly as well as privately(whose revenues are publicly available). As per the analysis done by the experts since past 3 years, they found that there are almost 8 billion of email IDs which were compromised. According to the experts, 2.7 million of the 8 billion hijacked email credentials have found there on the dark web.
According to the report and research of experts, it was found that every 1 in 10 from the Fortune 500 staff has been compromised and was leaked on dark web. Experts reported that the maximum number of credentials which were leaked had came from the financial sector of Fortune 500. "We see that on average each leaked Fortune 500 email address, associated with an online account, is found at 2.3 leaked data sources," VeriClouds spoken in the report."This fact contributes to increased credential availability and makes it a preferred method for bad actors to breach organizations using credential stuffing or account takeover attacks. Furthermore, the availability of credentials data increases when many bad actors repackage or combine older breach data and resell it."
VeriClouds declared that about 13.1% of leaked customer passwords which were kept on dark web for sell matched the present passwords of the customers of unspecified major airline company. Some other sectors who has most weak as well as compromised passwords includes industries like computers and office equipments industry(25%), the telecommunications industry(12.9%) ans the transportation equipment industry. The report stated that the maximum number of compromised passwords that is 109,000 came from the commercial bank industry. Some of the sectors like the telecommunications, wholesalers and the media industries had saw a rise of 22.4%, 2.3% and 5% in the number of credential leak past year 2017. But, fortunately, there is a decrease of 7.5% account credential leaked onto the dark web in 2017 as compared to 2016.
VeriClouds said "We don't know the specific reason for the overall decrease. One possible reason could be that some companies have applied more strict security policies to discourage employees using corporate email addresses to register accounts on 3rd party websites." Also said that they noticed that some of the well-known dark web credential sellers went disappeared from the market place in 2017.
